Testing and assessments for all ages may be administered within our facility.<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>The research in our lab focuses on effects of nutrition and brain development and function throughout the lifespan. We have studied breastfed 6-month olds to determine how the mother\u2019s genotype effects brain development. The process of picking up and recording the impulses is known as an EEG. This procedure tracks and records brain wave patterns.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Cheatham Lab uses the Dense-Array Electroencephalography (dEEG).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-475 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cheathamlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC01450-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cheathamlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC01450-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cheathamlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC01450-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The participant's\u00a0head is fitted with a stretchy net of soft-spongy sensors that has been soaked in a warm sali<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-476\" src=\"http:\/\/cheathamlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC01093-e1421868772478-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"152\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cheathamlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC01093-e1421868772478-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/cheathamlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC01093-e1421868772478-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cheathamlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC01093-e1421868772478.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 152px) 100vw, 152px\" \/>ne solution. The sponges on this net touch the\u00a0scalp and enable us to record the electrical activity generated by the\u00a0brain. After the net is in place, a few moments will be spent getting the cameras adjusted to track your eye movements. Then you will sit in front of a computer screen and watch pictures on the screen. While you are watching these pictures, we will be recording the brain activity (electrical impulses) at the scalp as well as the information from the cameras.<\/p>\n<p>The dEEG technique can monitor and interpret the brain\u2019s electrical activity in infants through the elderly when combined with computer-based activities. The dEEG tells us when the brain is active and how active it is.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-w591de88d2591a-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-has-style\" ><div class=\"panel-row-style panel-row-style-for-w591de88d2591a-1\" ><div id=\"pgc-w591de88d2591a-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-w591de88d2591a-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><div class=\"textwidget\"><p><span style=\"color: #5e7ab7;\">In the video to the right,\u00a0Independent Tribune reporter Ben McNeely's brain waves are measured by Dr. Cheatham. With this method, the researcher models the sequence of steps used to assemble a working toy. This technology is very accurate and precise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #5e7ab7;\">DXA has become the new \u201cgold standard\u201d because the results are extremely repeatable, and it has the ability to show exactly where fat is distributed throughout the body.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In general, a patient without coverage can expect to pay a couple of hundred dollars for the procedure. Many participants see this as a benefit\u00a0when DXA is used in a study, as they will receive the scan as part of their participation. The full reports will be given and explained to them.\u00a0 During the scan the participant simply lies on a padded table and an arm scans the length of his or her\u00a0body.\u00a0 The whole process usually takes less than 10 minutes and gives us a significant amount of important information!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-w591de88d2591a-4\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-has-style\" ><div class=\"panel-row-style panel-row-style-for-w591de88d2591a-4\" ><div id=\"pgc-w591de88d2591a-4-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-w591de88d2591a-4-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"7\" ><div class=\"textwidget\"><div id=\"NIRS\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Near-infrared Spectropscopy<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-416 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cheathamlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC01674-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" data-wp-pid=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cheathamlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC01674-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cheathamlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC01674-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cheathamlab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC01674-800x600.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><em><span style=\"color: #5e7ab7;\">Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive neuroimaging technique that uses light to measure blood flow changes in the brain.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>NIRS\u00a0uses source and detector optodes to indirectly measure brain activity as light travels from the source optodes through oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin and back to the detector optodes. \u00a0The\u00a0distribution of blood flow throughout the brain can tell us which areas are activated when done while completing a task. \u00a0For example, areas with increased oxygenated blood are more active.<\/p>\n<p>The NIRS system is portable and\u00a0suitable for children and adults.\u00a0The NIRS cap, similar to a swim cap, contains 128 spots for the optodes to be placed, allowing\u00a0the researcher to measure from any area of the brain.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about NIRS, please see our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cheathamlab.com\/index.php\/near-infrared-spectroscopy\/\">post in Lab Updates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-w591de88d2591a-5\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-has-style\" ><div class=\"panel-row-style panel-row-style-for-w591de88d2591a-5\" ><div id=\"pgc-w591de88d2591a-5-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-w591de88d2591a-5-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_siteorigin-panels-builder panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"8\" ><div id=\"pl-w591de88d25942\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-w591de88d25942-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-w591de88d25942-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-w591de88d25942-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div class=\"textwidget\"><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"cantab\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<h3><strong>CANTAB (Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The CANTAB is a series of tests that uses a push pad and a touch-screen tablet. This form of testing improves participant experience, therefore allowing us to capture the participant's best performance.
